SAVE MONEY

We understand that you may be looking for new ways to save money – did you know your home could be more efficient with a central heating system? A new boiler can be 90% efficient whereas a conventional boiler’s efficiency can be as low as 60%, especially if you make sure it is serviced every 12 months to keep it running at maximum efficiency. With rising energy costs, you could save hundreds of pounds a year.

HOW MUCH COULD YOU SAVE?

This will depend on how old and inefficient your existing boiler is.

Old boiler ratingAnnual savingCO2 saving per year
G ( < 70%) £3001,220kg
F (70–74%)  £200810kg
E (74–78%)£150610kg
D (78–82%)£105 420kg

These are estimated figures based on installing a new A-rated condensing boiler and full set of heating controls in a gas-heated, semi-detached home with three bedrooms.

WHICH TYPE OF BOILER DO I NEED?

It’s complicated, as they say… so let us help to explain some heating systems.

WHAT IS A “CONDENSING BOILER”?

Condensing boilers are more efficient than their predecessors due to their high efficiency and ability to convert water vapour condensation into heat.

With conventional boilers, not all of the fuel burnt reaches the heating system to warm your house, as some of the hot gases escape through the flue. However, with a condensing boiler, it captures some of the escaped heat and re-uses it, so it delivers more heat using the same amount of fuel. This will therefore save you money on your heating bills as it is far more efficient.

Modern boilers can be installed in a variety of ways, either conventional, combination or system configurations. However, what does all this mean?

CONVENTIONAL BOILER INSTALLATION

Conventional boilers are also known as regular boilers or open vented boilers, these boilers use a cold-water tank and a hot water cylinder for storage and are mostly suited for households that have multiple people who are likely to require hot water at the same time.

Advantages:

  • Hot water available from multiple taps at the same time.

Disadvantages:

  • Instantaneous hot water not available, it has to be heated first and then sent to the hot water cylinder.
  • If the hot water runs out you have to wait for it to reheat.
  • Space is required for the hot water cylinder and a supply tank.

Most suitable for:

Homes which need to have hot water in more than one place at the same time.

COMBI BOILER INSTALLATION

Combi boilers are the most popular kind in the UK.  They provide instantaneous heating and hot water with no Combi boilers are the most popular kind in the UK. They provide instantaneous heating and hot water with no space required for a hot water cylinder or supply tank in the loft or airing cupboard.

Advantages:

  • Unlimited heat and hot water when you need it.
  • No need for a hot water cylinder or a tank in your loft.
  • Small installation space requirement.

Disadvantages:

  • Water pressure might be reduced (flow) if you need hot water from more than one tap at a time.

SYSTEM BOILER INSTALLATION

System boilers are also referred to as ‘sealed systems’. They are similar to a regular boiler in that they have a hot water tank, but they do not have a supply tank and are filled directly from the cold feed instead. These boilers are mostly found in bigger homes with a higher demand of hot water, as they have a separate cylinder for storing water.

Advantages:

  • Hot water available from multiple taps at the same time.
  • No need for a tank in your loft.

Disadvantages:

  • Instantaneous hot water not available, it has to be heated first and then sent to the hot water cylinder.
  • If the hot water runs out you have to wait for it to reheat.
  • Space is required for the hot water cylinder.

Most suitable for:

Homes which need to have hot water in more than one place at the same time.

WHAT BOILER IS BEST FOR ME?

A conventional boiler is more efficient than a combination boiler at producing hot water, however during this process, some heat is lost when the water is stored in the hot water cylinder, so a combination boiler can be more efficient overall.

Before your new boiler installation, it’s important to consider which boiler will be the best option for you.

This will depend on a number of factors:

How much hot water do you use?

A large family using lots of hot water could be better off with a conventional boiler, whereas a smaller household using less may be better off with a combi.

Are you short of space?

A combi boiler doesn’t need a hot water cylinder, so it doesn’t take up as much space as other boilers.

Are you thinking of installing solar water heating?

Many combis are not compatible with solar water heating or cannot use it effectively.
